Any apps that gamify or incentivize saving money? Looking to get excited about it.

Main Post:

As the titles says, I’m looking for app recommendations which gamify or otherwise incentivize saving. Shopping is currently one of the things that brings me joy, but I’m looking to see if I can get even more excited about saving.

Cute fun savings app game?

Main Post:

Hi! I was wondering if a cute fun savings app game exists. Like where you save money and you get little virtual pets or something like that. I recently started using Stepets where you get little pets based on your daily steps and I was just thinking I wish there was something like that for saving, to make it a fun game. Please let me know if you know of anything! I tried searching and couldn't find anything 🙁 PS: I'm on Android.

Sleazy savings account interest rate games by CIT Bank

Main Post:

A buyer beware note:

CIT Bank generally offers attractive high-yield savings account interest rates (eg right now tops out at 4.4%): https://www.cit.com/cit-bank/bank/savings

The problem is every year or two, the bank spins off a new account type with the highest available interest rate while existing accounts' rates don't go up. So "Savings Builder" was initially good, then they introduced "Savings Connect" and now they have "Platinum Savings." These accounts are identical or virtually identical except for the rates-- 1%, 4.2%, and 4.4% respectively.

If you don't notice the shell game -- and there's no reason you would notice unless you're regularly checking -- you keep your money in the lower-rate account and lose out. If you do notice, you have to go through the annoying process of creating a new account, transferring money, etc.

I got so fed up with this, I liquidated my account and put it all in a Treasury money market fund (which these days is paying a higher rate anyways.)

Video games with interest on savings as a mechanic

Main Post:

I recently read about an interest rate cut in Animal Crossing, with the result that players are now investing more money in turnips instead of the Bank of Nook, similar to real-world interest rate cuts. What are some other examples of games, other than financial simulator games, where the player has some sort of bank account that can earn interest on savings? The only other I can think of is Civilization: Revolution, where America gets a 2% interest on its gold savings. Because this number rounds up, getting 25 gold in the early game can be an important source of revenue. In Civilization V, AI players will loan the player money at low interest rates, but they never ask to borrow money. What other games do you know where the player can make an investment? I'd be especially interested (heh) to hear about games where interest rates change and the impact on the best strategy for making money.

Top Comment: A bit of a different use but in auto-chess and its most direct derivatives (so Underlords and TFT, but not Hearthstone Battlegrounds), you get 10% of your saved up gold in interest every round (up to 5 iirc). So the general goal is to save up for 50 gold and then stay above that until you can push to end the game by spending all your gold, with various power bumps, matchups etc. pushing you to go below 50 earlier.

Any silly little saving challenges you do?

Top Comment: This guy I work with said when he wants to make a purchase of something fun but stupid like a new gaming system or instrument. Every time he would go to make it he would transfer that money to savings instead. He said it “satisfied” his purchase. He would still want the item but could hold off longer.
